Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should I begin seeing a gynecologist?

We recommend scheduling an initial appointment between 15 and 16 years of age for a conversational visit. If any problems occur sooner, we suggest making an appointment as needed.

How often should I see my gynecologist?

Women should visit their gynecologist yearly for a well-woman exam.

How often should I get a Pap smear?

Pap smears typically begin at age 21. Women in their 20s should have a Pap smear every 3 years. At age 30, it is recommended that women have a Pap smear with an HPV test every 5 years.

Do I need to reschedule my appointment if I am on my period?

All examinations, including Pap smears, can be completed any time of the month.

At what age should I start getting mammograms? How often should I get checked?

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends that women ages 40-44 should have the choice to start annual breast cancer screenings with mammograms if they wish to do so. The ACS also recommends yearly screenings for women ages 45-55. After age 55, healthy individuals with no known family history of breast cancer may begin scheduling mammograms every other year, or continue with yearly screenings.
